(February 13, 2008) In a speech to Parliament, Australian Prime Minister Kenneth Rudd offers a national apology to the Aborigines and the Torres Strait Islanders for their suffering and loss due to Australia's discriminatory policies of the past, such as taking indigenous children from their homes to be raised by white missionaries. This apology not only acknowledges a painful history, but also raises the question, "How do societes acknowledge the past in order to reconcile the future?"
