Mildred Loving, Matriarch of Interracial Marriage, Dies

May 14, 2008
(The Associated Press, May 5, 2008) Mildred Loving and her white husband challenged Virginia's law banning mixed race marriages.  In 1967, the US Supreme Court struck down Virginia's law and laws in 17 other states that also had a similar ban.  The article, "Mildred Loving, Martiarch of Interracial Marriage, Dies," looks at her legacy as an upstander for racial equality.  On the 40th anniversary of the court case Loving vs. Virginia, Mildred Loving presented a speech entitled, "Loving for All," in which she reflects on the importance of the Supreme Court's decision on her own life.
