Mapping Diversity

July 14, 2008

(WNYC, June 12, 2008) "Mapping Diversity" is a segment of the Brian Lehrer show that focuses on what the most recent U.S. Census reveals about immigration flows and racial diversity in the United States. You can listen to the program, which includes an interview with Marc Perry, chief of the Population Distribution Branch at the Census. This website also includes a fascinating slideshow of maps that illustrate immigration and racial diversity across the United States. This is a wonderful resource for an immigration unit.

Discussion Questions:
  • What can you learn from looking at these maps? What does this tell us about the United States in general? About the state or city in which you live? How does the information from these maps compare with census information from one hundred years ago? Fifty years ago?
  • What impact does racial diversity have on a community? What impact does racial homogeneity have on a community?
  • Notice the places on the maps with the largest immigrant populations. What do you think attracts immigrants to these places?
