Give Me the Lesson Without the Spin
(Los Angeles Times, April 27, 2008) In the editorial,
"Give Me the Lesson Without the Spin," high school student Matthew LaClair
recounts his experience with political and religious bias in the classroom. Matthew concludes, "What is most distressing
is not that some public school teachers preach their religion, or that some
authors put politics ahead of education. It is that it is so rare for anyone to
call them on it."
- Is it ever appropriate for teachers to share their religious beliefs with their students? Why or why not?
- In the public school, where should the line be drawn between church and state? Is it appropriate for schools to have holiday parties that are associated with religious holidays? Is it appropriate for students and teachers to wear religious symbols and clothing at school?
- How is school curriculum determined? Who should determine what material should be taught?
- How are students taught to recognize bias in the classroom? Is it possible to remove bias from educational materials?
