A Protestant Town's Conspiracy of Good in Vichy France

May 14, 2008

(Christian Science Monitor, May 14, 2008) The article, "A Protestant Town's Conspiracy of Good in Vichy France," tells the story of a Protestant community that saved thousands, most of them Jews, from persecution by the Nazis. Today, the French are thinking about how to incorporate this story into their nationalized school curriculum. This process raises questions about how the French role in the Holocaust has been taught and why the story of Chambon has not received more attention.

Discussion Questions:
  • What does learning about rescuers and resisters during the Holocaust teach us about history and human behavior?
  • What factors contributed to the Chambon community's decision to save Jews during the Holocaust?
  • Can conformity and authority be forces for good?
