Awele MakebaCleveland --The internationally known educator and story-teller Awele Makeba presented her acclaimed program I'm Not Getting On Until Jim Crow Gets Off: Teen and Women Activists in the Montgomery Bus Boycot to over 500 students in Cleveland last week.

In her performance, Awele steps in and out of the characters of different historical players-the unsung heroes of the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, many of whom were young people-while also interacting with the audience to explore the complexities of this history.

For the students, it was a powerful demonstration of how youth participated to make a difference and were leaders in their communities. More than 90 Students in Facing History's Student Leadership Group also had the opportunity to meet with Awele and create a memorial to honor the legacy of the boycotts.

"The feedback from teachers has been tremendous," said Facing History Program Associate Pamela Donaldson. "They said it was the best presentation on race they had ever seen."
