(The New York Times, January 6, 2008) "Sixty Years Removed from War, but Some Hardships Remain [2]" explores the efforts of Dr. Robert Ivker on behalf of Holocaust survivors living in poverty. Besides trying to get them a "reparations" pension from Germany, he is also raising money for them from private donors in the New York area.
Discussion Questions
  • Speaking about Holocaust survivors, Dr. Ivker says, "We really owe a debt of gratitude to them for the strength to survive."  To what extent do you agree with this statement? Who should repay this debt?
  • What do you think motivates Dr. Ivker to help Holocaust survivors?
  • What is the purpose of monetary payments to survivors of massive human rights abuses? Who should pay them? How should the amount of payment be determined?
