By January of 2009 Facing History and Ourselves will be implemented districtwide in the Boulder Valley School District [1] (BVSD). We will work with over 70 Social Studies teachers at the middle and high school level who will each impact hundreds of students every year.
Over the coming summer, all 10th grade BVSD educators will participate in our in-depth Holocaust and Human Behavior seminar [2]. In the coming years, 11th grade American History teachers will explore two Facing History curricula: Race and Membership in American History: The Eugenics Movement and Choices in Little Rock, focusing on the Little Rock Nine and the Civil Rights Movement. "Overall, our purpose is to support the conversation about what is needed and hoped for in the schools. We want to help build community through our professional development and help provide a safe space in the classroom so that important and relevant curriculum can be included," says Fran Sterling, Director of Facing History's Denver/Rocky Mountain States office.
