Participating Schools in the United Kingdom

The National Curriculum for England, implemented in September 2008, has given teachers and schools the opportunity to rethink how subjects fit into the broader meaning of educational experience for students. Developments such as the cross-curricular themes of the National Curriculum, the duty to promote Community Cohesion as well as government initiatives such as Preventing Violent Extremism (known as the Prevent Agenda) are reminders of the important work education can do to help students become active and engaged citizens in their communities.

Facing History and Ourselves embraces and can actively support many of these initiatives. Cross-curricular themes such as Culture, Identity and Diversity, Community Participation, and Creativity and Critical Thinking are all issues that the Facing History ‘scope and sequence’ supports.

Facing History and Ourselves courses and methodology can be seen as cross-curricular, bringing various subjects together to work around particular themes. Facing History and Ourselves: Holocaust and Human Behavior, our core study of the background, events, and legacies of the Holocaust, can involve subjects such as history, English, art, religious education, drama, citizenship, and science.
