Los Angeles classroomSince the Los Angeles regional office opened in July 1994, more than 1500 local educators have participated in Facing History's professional development programs. These teachers annually reach over 150,000 middle and high school students in over 140 public, religious and independent schools throughout Southern California.

    It was clear from the overwhelming public response to our Community Conversation Film as a Catalyst for Social Change, sponsored by The Allstate Foundation, that people are eager to discuss how filmmakers can make a difference.

    Garfield High student Barbara Silva was awarded "Best Student of the Year" out of all students across the U.S. engaged on the 27 projects sponsored by The History Channel. Barbara credits her Facing History teacher, Claudia Rojas, for involving her in the project which explored local Los Angeles history through the experience of lowrider culture.

  • A senior at Carson High School, Jessica S. recently spoke at the Los Angeles Benefit about the two-year journey she and her classmates experienced in teacher Merri Weir's Facing History classes. On the first day of class Jessica recalled self-segregating, thinking 'my color, my friends.
  • San Diego, CA - Facing History and Ourselves is pleased to announce that Viana Rodriguez, a history teacher at Southwest High School in San Diego, California, was recently voted "Teacher of the Year" at her school.

In this clip, Dora, a student at the California Academy of Math and Science, talks about starting a human rights club in her school and asks Power about how to help people develop a sense of moral obligation. Power gives suggestions about how to raise awareness, particularly about the genocide in Darfur, and explains how individual actions and letter-writing have had an effect.

She also speaks about how everyone has many aspects of their identity, but in times of crisis we tend to focus on only one part of our own identity or that of others.

Participating Schools
Facing History is actively used in history, literature, interdisciplinary, government and specially designed Facing History electives. In addition to being incorporated into K-12 schools, Facing History is also taught in colleges and universities.
