NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar speaks for Facing History in Denver
Over 4,500 students from schools across the Denver area packed the Wells Fargo Theater to hear former NBA basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar speak about a history that has rarely been taught. The talk by Kareem Adbul-Jabbar highlighted his book, Brothers in Arms: The Epic Story of the 761st Tank Battalion, WWII's Forgotten Heroes and included interactive question and answer session with community members and Facing History students. The goal of the event was to educate participants about the role African-Americans played in the war effort, the struggle to integrate the United States military, and the importance of learning the stories of individuals and groups who acted with courage to overcome racism and to make a positive difference for all citizens in our country. A group of African-American veterans who attended the event received special recognition from the speaker and audience.
The event was co-sponsored by Facing History, the Mizel Museum, and the City of Denver.
