Joanne Upton, Winner of the 2008 Margot Stern Strom Teaching Award

April 12, 2008
London- We are proud to announce that Joanne Upton, history and citizenship teacher at Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys in London, is a 2008 Margot Stern Strom Teaching Award recipient from our international programme. The award, named after the organization's founder and executive director Margot Stern Strom, honors outstanding educators of Facing History and Ourselves and supports those educators in the implementation of projects related to the work of Facing History.

Upton believes Facing History can be even more powerful for her students if it is adopted across departments. The award will allow her to visit one of Facing History's model schools in New Haven, Connecticut where she can learn how they have very successfully developed a whole-school approach to Facing History. Upton will meet with teachers, students and school leaders at New Haven Academy, a magnet school started in 2003 that integrates Facing History throughout the curriculum. Upton's findings will help her team strategize new ways to infuse Facing History into the culture of their school and across disciplines.
