Freedom Riders Comes to Santa Monica’s Broad Stage

December 6, 2011

The award-winning film Freedom Riders will be the subject of a Facing History and Ourselves Community Conversation tonight in Santa Monica, California at The Broad Stage. The free program, presented in partnership with the Allstate Foundation, will include excerpts from the PBS documentary and a conversation led by former Justice Department civil rights attorney, author, and Facing History board member Gerald Stern. Freedom Rider Ernest “Rip” Patton Jr. will join the discussion along with the University of Southern California’s Geoffrey Cowan, who was a voter registration volunteer in Mississippi during 1964.

“The Freedom Rides are an inspiring example of the leadership of young people, as well as the cooperation among people from diverse backgrounds in working towards improving our society,” Marti Tippens Murphy, Los Angeles director of Facing History, told the Santa Monica Mirror this week.
