March 2, 2010

On February 23rd the LAUSD School Board approved the application submitted by a group of Facing History teachers at Garfield High School to start a new school through the LAUSD School Choice Initiative. Superintendent Ramon Cortines recommended the teachers’ application, citing as rationale four bullet points including:

The school will “partner with Facing History and Ourselves, which has a proven track record of accomplishments and will support the SJLA curriculum for effective implementation”

The Social Justice Leadership Academy will open on the new Torres Campus in East L.A this fall.

Side note to the story: one of the teachers leading this effort is a Facing History alumna!
