Bullying Prevention, Changing School Culture at Cleveland Area Summit

January 9, 2012

Facing History and Ourselves will co-sponsor a two-day event from February 2-3 for students and educators to help reduce bullying and build community. The bullying prevention summit, titled “Changing School and University Culture and Climate,” will take place at Cuyahoga Community College in Highland Hills, Ohio.

The summit will begin with a film screening sponsored by Facing History, of the documentary Not in Our Town, with a panel discussion before and after about the event about promoting civic participation. Facing History has worked extensively with the film; it is featured in our traveling multimedia exhibition Choosing to Participate. The summit continues the next day with two training sessions; the first will empower students and educators at the high school and college levels to build community and reduce bullying by modeling the behaviors they wish to see on campus. A separate training will be held for faculty, staff, and administrators to learn about schools’ accountability and legal responsibilities in addressing bullying.

“Hate crimes are not a police problem. They’re a community problem,” says Former Police Chief Wayne Inman of Billings, Montana, in Not in Our Town. “Hate crimes and hate activity flourish only in communities that allow them to flourish.”

This event is made possible by support from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture
