Dr. Sheldon B. Korones
Dr. Sheldon B. Korones, Founder of the Regional Medical Center's Newborn Center,
Memphis, TN Dr. Sheldon B. Korones founded The Regional Medical Center’s Newborn Center in 1968 to ensure that no infants die because their families could not afford critical intensive care. He spent hours away from his private practice caring for critically ill babies whose families could not afford private care. Due to Korones’ dedication, The Regional Medical Center’s intensive care unit staff has treated more than 45,000 premature or critically ill babies. The Newborn Center is one of the oldest and largest in the United States. Dr. Korones also modeled great courage in his private practice, becoming one of the first area doctors to integrate his private waiting room. At a time where separation was the norm in nearly all walks of life, he had a vision for a better more tolerant Memphis.
