Darfur Now and Not On Our Watch Project

Facing History and Ourselves and ENOUGH have partnered to create and distribute classroom materials to accompany the movie Darfur Now and the book Not On Our Watch. The teaching unit includes four lessons that:
  • provide an introduction to the genocide in Darfur
  • help students identify how activists have responded to violence in the region
  • encourage students to think about the complexity of activism and lastly,
  • ask students to connect this material to their own experiences and ideas about activism, genocide, and conflict resolution.

In September, a limited number of copies of the film Darfur Now and the book Not on our Watch will be given to educators in the Facing History network who visit and register on our website.

About the ENOUGH project
Enough ProjectENOUGH is a project of the Center for American Progress to end genocide and crimes against humanity. With a focus on the crises in Sudan, Chad, eastern Congo, Somalia and northern Uganda, ENOUGH's strategy papers and briefings provide sharp field analysis and targeted policy recommendations based on a "3P" crisis response strategy: promoting durable peace, providing civilian protection, and punishing perpetrators of atrocities. ENOUGH works with concerned citizens, advocates, and policymakers to prevent, mitigate, and resolve these crises. Coming in fall 2008 from ENOUGH, an exciting new initiative to link U.S. students directly with students from Darfur:
The ENOUGH Project, UNHCR, Participant Media, the NBA and others will launch a sister schools initiative, in which schools across the U.S. will partner with sister schools in the 12 refugee camps in Chad. The program will support specific educational initiatives in the refugee camps by means of an online registry in which schools in the U.S. commit to fund specific items in the refugee camp schools-everything from books, to teachers' training, to the school structure itself. Students in the U.S. will be able to communicate directly via video with students from Darfur in the refugee camps. The Initiative will also provide a new online community forum that will allow U.S. sister schools to create profile pages through which they will be able to blog, upload photos, movies, and join groups. U.S. sister schools will also be able to highlight their fundraising efforts and encourage friends to support the initiative.

Funding for this project was generously provided by Participant Media and the Righteous Persons Foundation.
