honoring Dr. Leon Bass, one of the first soldiers to enter the
Buchenwald Concentration Camp after its liberation in 1945. As an
African American who endured humiliating discrimination, this
experience had a profound impact on him and his future. He returned to
Philadelphia to become a teacher and then a principal, but he never
forgot the horror of what he saw at Buchenwald. For many years, he has
been telling his dramatic personal story in Facing History classrooms
throughout the country, influencing young people in the life choices
they make.
Since 1976, Facing History and Ourselves
has been engaging students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of
racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to promote the development
of a more humane and informed citizenry. By studying the historical
development and lessons of the Holocaust and other examples of
genocide, students make the essential connection between history and
the choices they confront in their own lives.
Please join us for the 17th Annual
Chicago Benefit Dinner to support and celebrate educators, students,
and community members who face history and choose to participate!
